Here are my photography workshops for Fall 2011. All classes will be held at my Colorado Springs studio off of 8th Street. Since people tend to learn differently, you’ll see that I have several different opportunities for learning the basics of using your digital SLR camera. You can sign up for one of my personalized one-on-one classes, a one-day workshop, or a 5-week course that meets for two hours each week. The private classes are very popular, but some people prefer having a little more time to cover the material. You will pay in advance to reserve your spot in the class, and that payment is refundable if you later find out that you will not be able to attend. I ask for as much notice as possible, though, so I have the opportunity to fill your spot. I reserve the right to cancel any class that does not have enough students signed up. To sign up for any class, you can contact me at MaryLynneAshley@gmail.com or on my cell at 719-205-7236.
Take Better Photos of People, Friday, September 16th, 4pm – 7pm , $79
In this 3-hour hands-on workshop we’ll look at some of the basics of getting better photos of the people in your life. A solid working knowledge of your camera is preferred, but not required. This class will be less about the technical aspects of photography, and more about the artistic aspects. Topics will include positioning people for the most flattering photos, getting better skin tones, eliminating distractions and drawing attention to your subject, photographing people with natural light, and when do you need to use flash?
Thinking about Going Pro? Friday, September 30th, 6:00pm – 9:00pm, $99
You’ve been tossing around the idea of starting up a photography business photographing people, or maybe you’ve already started up a little business. I share my successes and failures from my 10 years as a professional portrait photographer, and offer guidance for starting your business. We’ll talk about a wide array of things to consider, including, but not limited to, setting yourself up in business, getting clients, improving your work, educational opportunities, photography organizations and pricing considerations. I am an open book, so come prepared to ask any questions you want. A small investment now can have a huge payoff later, as you learn from someone who’s been there.
The Art of Newborn Photography — SOLD OUT!!!, Monday, October 24th, 9:00am – 5:00pm, $99 (before 10/5 … after that it is $120)
This class is offered through the Professional Photographers of America’s Super Monday program, so registration is handled through them on their Super Monday page. If you want to get in on the increasingly popular newborn photographic specialty, now’s the perfect chance. Join Mary Lynne and learn how to create beautiful, touching portraits of newborns and their families. She will cover lighting (with techniques that apply to both window and studio lighting), posing, props, and how to create variety within a session—all to help you wow your clients and provide them the best art possible. You’ll even see posing techniques demonstrated with newborn models!
Photography I: Digital Photography Essentials, 5 consecutive Sundays, Sundays, 1 – 3pm, 10/2 – 10/30, $249
In this 5-week course we will cover the basics of digital photography, teaching you how to gain creative control of your digital SLR camera. We’ll cover focusing, white balance, the exposure triangle (aperture, shutter speed and ISO), lens selection, understanding the various buttons and settings on your camera, and the basics of working with natural light to photograph people. We’ll also cover some basic post-processing (what to do with your photos once you’ll taken them off your camera and put them onto your computer). Each class session will include an easy assignment in which you will apply what we’ve covered. This course is a combination of hands-on exercises and lecture, so you will need to bring a digital SLR camera each week, as well as materials for note-taking. No previous experience necessary.
Personalized One-on-One Photography Class, two hours: ONGOING. Contact Mary Lynne to schedule, $125
You probably paid a lot of money for that nice digital camera, but are you getting your investment’s worth out of it? So many people find that once they have that fancy digital SLR they don’t quite know what to do with it! I send each student a little photography “quiz” to assess your skills, and we start from there. For beginners, I will typically cover focusing, getting good color with your white balance settings, the exposure triangle (aperture, shutter speed and ISO) and why you should care about it, and we’ll go through the buttons and see how they all relate to what you’ve learned. We are always able to cover lots of ground in two hours, and you’ll leave feeling so much more confident in your ability to operate your camera. If you already have a good foundation, we could instead use the two-hour period to cover more advanced topics, including studio lighting.
